Subsequent Pregnancy Program
A community-based program to delay second pregnancies among adolescent mothers.
Goals of SPP
- Delay a second pregnancy
- Practice contraception correctly and consistently
- Remain in and graduate from high school
Program Activities
- Focuses specifically on delaying a second pregnancy among adolescent mothers.
- Participants are African American, Caucasian, Mexican, and Puerto Rican, age 12-18.
- Provides two primary interventions: a personal, long-term relationship with a home visitor and intense training through group participation.
- Trains second-year participants to work as Subsequent Pregnancy Peer Educators in their own schools and communities.
Outcomes
- 3,000 young mothers from 30 communities in Illinois
- 3% have had a second pregnancy while in SPP
- 87% have remained in school or graduated
Carried out as a collaborative effort between seven local agencies with long-term support from the State of Illinois, Department of Human Services
